After a long day's ride full of more than their fair share of bumps and bruises, Meela and Jack could finally see the top of the wizards tower peaking out of the fog. The city of Evanmoore lay before them, a thick layer of fog drifting off of the lake.

"I hope you haven't gotten too comfortable back there" the alchemist said, giving Meela a wry smile. "We'll be arriving in a few minutes. I'm sure once we've had some more time to experiment with you in a more complete lab we'll be able to get to the root of your problems." The cart hit another rock, sending jarring pain through Meela's body. Jack rode alongside them on his horse while Meela's riding dog laid next to her in the cart, taking up far more of the cart than he had any right to.

Jack rode along side the cart, making sure to keep up. He kept glancing over to Meela, worried about her condition. He was pretty convinced that her foot would have to be cut off and she would never walk again. He would feel pretty bad about that. He thought quietly as they went down the road, thinking about the things that happened with the group and with Kalarel. He had never doen anything like that before. He loved the feeling of doing something good.

Meela bit back a groan of pain as the cart rattled over yet another rock, spiking pain from her leg to the rest of her body. She rested her head against her dog's flank, unwilling to sit up to see the city proper.

"Good," she sighed. "This is ridiculous." The curse from the river had never been a good thing, exactly, but she hadn't anticipated it becoming so severe. Having to leave the rest of the party for what had started out as a minor injury was embarrassing and frustrating. Not to mention the alchemist seemed just a bit too eager to examine her...

A few minutes later the cart ground to a halt in front of the gate, the horse leading it huffing in the chilly fog. After a brief exchange with the alchemist, the guards raised the gates, though not before keeping a wary eye on Meela. As soon as they were through the gate, the alchemist looked back at them again. "I'm sure you're nervous about meeting with someone as powerful as the Prime. Don't worry though, he is a very welcoming fellow. Though as to be expected, you'll need to remove your shoes in his home and avoid any eye contact with him before spoken to. Oh, and it is customary to provide a gift upon entering his estate. I'm sure you have something prepared so that shouldn't be an issue."

The cart rattled along the cobble streets, passing through another small gate as they entered the government district.

"A gift??" Jack questioned, a bit alarmed. His mind quickly went to his new sword that he found after the fight with Kalarel. He felt defensive instantly and swallowed hard. He didn't have anything else worth giving, cept maybe his old sword, but that one was special too.
"Would gold work?" He asked, glancing over the the young alchemist that had been taking them to the prime.

"Well, the shoes won't be a problem," Meela said, glancing down and wiggling her bare feet. "Hope he doesn't count bandages as shoes. But gifts . . . no, I don't have anything, I think."

Meela reached for her bag and dug through. All she had, aside from travel supplies, was a few smaller leather goods she hadn't gotten around to selling. Would a leather necklace even count to someone who demanded presents before people entered his house? She somewhat doubted it.

The alchemist frowned, shaking his head slowly. "This won't do, this won't do at all... do you want to insult the Prime? Perhaps we should wait until the morning and have you find something in the market. Giving a few coins to someone such as him is like pouring water into the ocean. It must be something that shows your sincerity and well meaning." He rummaged through his pockets for a moment before pulling a crystalline vial from his pocket and holding it up for them to see. "You see, the crystal here shows the purity of his creations and the transparency I have with him. These handles are made from an orc's fangs, the strongest material in the fierce beast's teeth. This is to show the how strongly we hold to our vocation and that our focus will not be broken. This onyx embedded rim shows such a deep darkness that reflects how many mysteries still remain within our art and that we will always seek to uncover more. I..." He sighed and looked down. "I hope it is worthy of the master, but I suppose that is not for me to decide."

Jack leaned over a bit to look at what the alchemist had in his hand. It didn't seem all that fancy to him.
His shifting sword seemed far more special then that, but he would never give that up.
"How do we find something like that??" He sighed a little as he asked, completely unsure they could find or pay for something worthy.

"Well, we were hardly given any warning, were we?" Meela picked out one of her leather trinkets, a braided leather cord from which dangled a smooth metal disk. She tried to think of how she could play it up. The leather was . . . the smooth, resilient result of hard work and dedication, not unlike the master's kingdom? The disk was . . . something. It was a small iron disk.

She sighed and tipped her head back into Malik's ribs. The dog gave a little wuff of irritation.

The alchemist sighed in irritation at the halfling's retort. "If I recall correctly, I told you both back in Brightmeadow Township that we were coming to see his greatness. I'd thought you knew enough about etiquette to prepare a gift. He looked over at Jack. "And this isn't something you go and 'find'... Some random bauble picked up at a market would be an insult to his greatness!"

He looked over at Meela's trinket and smirked. "Well I suppose it will have to do... I see the leather represents how you are like livestock when compared to the Prime. How roughly it is hewn shows that you are but novices in this world and still need much work to become something worth seeing. And that bit of iron stuck on the end there is representative of your simplistic nature and the lowly stock of the earth you come from. Let us be off then."

Jack shot a nasty glare to their guide, biting back what he so deeply wanted to say. If he got too worked up Jayce would just take advantage of the situation.
He sighed deeply and tried his best to pretend like he just didn't hear it.

"Wow," Meela said dryly, tucking the leather necklace into her side pouch. "I thought you were an alchemist, not a professional sycophant. Besides, I would love to see you kill and craft your own leather..."

Malik huffed, and she smiled as she pat his head.

"Why waste my time on a peasants task when I could be researching the next greatest concoction of our age. You're welcome to cut your rags and strips, but don't try to drag me down into it. Ahh, here we are!"

The cart came to a halt in front of an intricate metal gate leading into a large garden. The edge of a tower could be seen just barely on the edge of the fog.

While some how managing to keep his mouth shut, Jack pulled his large horse to a stop and climbed down off of his saddle. He looked up at the tower sitting nestled in the fog. With out saying a word, knowing that if he did it would end badly, he moved to the back of the cart and offered Meela a hand to help her walk.
He was a bit worried that this alchemist they travels so far to see wouldn't be able to help her foot. And he felt partially responsible.

Meela made a face at the alchemist's back, but it went unnoticed as the top of the tower crested through the fog. She wobbled to her feet and hopped down with Jack's help. Malik hopped down from the cart and knelt, allowing his master to slide into the simple but sturdy saddle on his back. Meela sighed softly with relief as she settled herself with her weight off her feet.

"Here's hoping this wizard's everything he says," she muttered for Jack to hear. "His pet's way too much to deal if he can't fix this."

"Now come along, we mustn't keep him waiting." They moved through the garden and stood before the tower's gate. The alchemist gave an excited smile back at the two of them in tow and reminded them "Just remember what I told you," before knocking three times. A few moments later the doorway opened leading into a long foyer lined with 3 pairs of large mirrors as well as several small tables and a 2 suits of armor. At the end of the passageway was a spiral staircase leading upwards. The room seemed surprisingly large for what they had seen of the tower from the outside.

About 15 feet from the door stood an elderly man dark grey robes lined with silver runes. He peered at the three of them inquisitively.

Jack swallowed a lump he didn't know was building up as they stepped into the tower.
"Uh... Hello. My friend is hurt and sick and we were told you could help us..." He stated meekly, motioning at Meela on her large dog.

Meela looked around the tower in interest, wondering what kinds of magic surrounded them. The inside seemed far bigger than the outside would have suggested, and there was the entire question of what the wizard studied and knew . . .

A twinge from her injured leg snapped her focus back.

"Ah . . ." she began, resting a hand over her pocket containing the leather trinket. "Yes. I don't know precisely what kind of magic caused it, but it's a curse of some kind as far as anyone can tell." One that she was genuinely fearing may kill her at the rate it was progressing since their experiences with the cultists.

The alchemist shot a glare over at his two companions. "I am deeply sorry for how rude these two are being, the sickness must be spreading to her mind and for him... ahem, anyways! I am Roy, an aspiring alchemist at your service oh great Prime." He bowed deeply before producing the vial he had shown earlier. "Please, a gift in honor of you allowing us into your gracious presence!" He stammered looking up at the old man.

The man gave a chuckle. "The Prime you say? And that looks like an alchemists vial if I'm not mistaken. You must be seeking Revan below this tower. I apologize for any confusion, I'm Salathen the court wizard." He gave a small bow and looked over towards Meela. "Now, a curse you say? I am not much for salves and cures, but if it is a curse as you say I wouldn't be object to seeing if it is something my magics may have something for." He gave the group a warm smile and gestured for them to enter.

Jack shot a glare at the little alchemist, it was really tempting to punch him in the jaw.
"Well if you can help her it would be really awesome," he said to the wizard at length. "It's just getting worse, though she wont admit it."

Meela cast a halfhearted look of disdain Jack's way, although what he said was true. She slouched in the saddle as Malik padded along down the hallway leading deeper into the tower. "Whoever it is that can help me would be wonderful," she added. At this point, anyone who was more competent than their irritating guide would be welcome.

The alchemist looked over at them flabbergasted. "Why would you waste your time on tricks from some hedge wizard when the greatest mind of an era is so close at hand? You shall take us to the Prime immediately."

Salathen ignored the command and walked beside Meela, studying her. "Please, explain to me how this occurred. I sense a sort of rift within you." He looked over at Jack as they reached the stairway. And you say it has been growing then? Quite interesting indeed."

The alchemist hurried to catch up to then, dismayed at how things were going.

"Well... we were in this hallway of like death and darkness..." Jack kind of trailed off knowing he sounded nuts, "trying to stop a guy from releasing Orcus (sp?)... And her foot went into this black river that I had assumed was acid but apparently it isn't..." He tried to explain with out really knowing all the details. He ignored the comment about the rift. It just made him feel uncomfortable and like he was caught doing something wrong.

"I was trying to cross a chasm in the corridor and the river was--something magic, I don't know. We thought it was acid, but it turned out to be something else. I still don't know what, but our guesses have been it was tied to the demon in the middle of it," Meela added. "Nobody else has been able to do much for it. For awhile, it was just in my foot and I could walk if I was bandaged up, but it's spread since then."

The alchemist piped in with his two cents as well "I prepared a concoction as well that was able to diffuse the infection throughout her body in order to reduce the pain and severity. She's lucky to have come to me and still have use of her foot."

Salathen nodded, listening to them as he climbed the stairs. "A cult of Orcus, that may explain the rift. It is most likely energies from the Shadowfell that are flowing through it into your body and corrupting it with negative energies." They reached the top of the stairwell and came into a brightly lit room with white walls and ceilings and decorated with a few red chairs, couches, and tables. "Please, sit. I may be able to reverse the spread and draw this from you, though were it still concentrated that may have been easier. As it stands, I can't promise it will be the most pleasant process for you."

Malik padded over to one of the cushy chairs, and Meela slid into it with a faint sigh of relief. Her dog immediately curled up at her feet, his head up and ears perked as he surveyed the room.

"Well, I can't say this has been fun either way," she said with a grimace.

The alchemist did not follow the group up the stairs.

Salathen exited the room through a door the 2 hadn't noticed previously and was gone for several minutes. When he returned, he was carrying several tools and trinkets which he laid out on a side table. He held up a small eyeglass and peered closely at Meela through it, seeming to follow pathways along her body, muttering to himself the whole time and writing notes with his other hand. He then plucked a hair from her head and dropped it into an alembic, the liquid bubbling and turning brown. "As I thought..." He then drew out a small mallet and tapped Meela in various places, numbness spreading through her body at the points of impact. Finally, he lit a small bunch of dried herbs aflame and held it above her head, the smoke forcing her to sneeze.

"It seems I should be able to remove this... ailment from you by the morning. Before that however, I'm afraid I'll need to draw up an agreement. After an... incident, I'm required to do so when performing any rituals with a living subject. Oh, and I almost forgot! To recoup the costs of this ritual, I will require a repayment agreement as well."

Jack watched the wizard with a quirked eyebrow. He didn't understand anything he was doing and didn't see how any of it was going to help Meela. He actually thought they would have to end up chopping her foot off.
"Payment?" He asked, "incident?"

Meela put up with the prodding and the numbing and the forced sneezing that forced her body to spasm with pain, figuring eventually the wizard would have to be finished and would have a better idea of how to help her. Her dog watched the entire time, looking uncertain and slightly aggressive toward the old wizard.

"The payment is fine," she said, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. The numbess in various random parts of her body was getting uncomfortable. "But this contract . . . ?"

Salathen chuckled to himself. "Oh, it wasn't really anything... just some noble boy who didn't fully appreciate the intricacies of magic is all. Nothing to worry about in here," he said, patting a pocket in his robes from which he then drew the scroll. "Just a few notes about not waging war or swearing blood oaths due to strangely colored skin, hearing strange voices, loss of sleep or limbs, just a standard agreement. Here you are then." He said, handing them the scroll and a pen. Once that is signed you'll need to accompany me to the ritual chamber. May not be as comfortable as the chair, but I assure you it gets the job done. None of my subjects could complain yet!" he continued with a smile.

Meela glanced over the piece of parchment. Waging war and blood oaths--no, she wouldn't do that, but if anything else came up, she couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be a quiet assassination. Or at least a theft.

"Fine, fine," she sighed, scribbling her name at the bottom of the sheet and setting aside the quill. She hopped down from her chair and onto Malik's waiting back, ready to pad after the eccentric wizard.
